Re: I\'m thinking of instituting a new tipping policy
I must say during my recent visit to they Wynn I was surprised and appalled by a couple of the dealers. I forgot their names but they were rude, discourtious, did not pay attention to the game, talked too much to the players, were doing chip tricks with the drop etc. One dealer would even go so far as when Player A bet, Player B would be thinking no more than 30 seconds and dealer would mockingly push the pot to player A as to tell Player B "we all know you're not calling lets get on with it". I had resolved to throw a fit if he did that in a pot I was involved in.

Re: I\'m thinking of instituting a new tipping policy
Regarding the first thing... I'll say that for those who hold a certain viewpoint, they don't feel that those who hold a certain other viewpoint will ever get it, so it's energy wasted trying to explain.
As to the other thing... my point is that the "ideal" world of people tipping dealers for good service is a world in which everyone at the table is much better at poker. I prefer my opponents be worse players than I am. |

Fair enough. [ QUOTE ] As to the other thing... my point is that the "ideal" world of people tipping dealers for good service is a world in which everyone at the table is much better at poker. I'm aiming more at the 2+2 crowd that (at least theoretically) realizes we tip dealers for professional services and not for dealing good/bad cards. These are the people that tip $X a pot every time just because thats what they're suppose to do. I'd like these people to distribute the tips in a slightly more biased way. Obviously, biased towards good dealing, which is what the OP was proposing. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I believe in the bigger picture that what goes around, comes around. You reap what you sow. $1 tip should always be appreciated, but is pretty far from earth shattering. The day I start stiffing dealers for a buck on principle is the day I'd need a good smack. BTW - I tip blind steals $1. [/ QUOTE ] I find many a dealer who show no appreciation(and disgust) if they recieve only a $1 tip. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah i was at a club in dallas once where one of the owners of the room would deal on occasion, and he'd act all pissy about small tips, and if you forgot to tip he would say something or slam a chip on the box. Fwiw, my tipping policy is usually $1 hand, and I dont tip blind steals. If a dealer and I develop a repoire <sp>, I'll tip between $2 and $5 depending on the size of the pot, but those dealers are few and far between. It takes a total dick for me to stiff someone. But I will if the dealer is either rude, or cant deal worth a [censored]. I used to tip $5 a hand in a 15-30 game I played in, and one time tipped a dealer $300 in one hand. Then I realized that what I had paid in tip/rake, and it made me think twice. The fact that most dealers I know make upwards of $40/hr makes me feel fine tipping $1/hand. |

Re: I\'m thinking of instituting a new tipping policy
In my ideal world, everyone would work for tips or commission, and the best would earn what they're worth. Imagine the DMV or the IRS if they worked for tips? Ok, maybe not the IRS.

Re: I\'m thinking of instituting a new tipping policy
[ QUOTE ]
Currently I pretty much tip $1/hand unless the dealer has done something that down to display a horrible attitude or sense of entitlement. Obviously I skip blind steals whatever. Anyway, I play mostly at the Wynn and I'm thinking of identifying maybe 4-5 dealers who are condescending or obnoxious or generally discourteous and stiffing them all the time. Consequently I'll pick 4-5 dealers I think are very good and tip them $2/hand. I end up tipping the same amount but a more meritocratic matter as opposed to the current socialistic system. Please comment, and when you do please identify for yourself as a dealer or a player. [/ QUOTE ] I think you are about 8 years late with this proposal - it has been my policy for a long, long time, with the caveat that if it is an exceptional dealer, I will throw a 2-ball onto a good pot. |

Re: I\'m thinking of instituting a new tipping policy
I tip dealers for doing their job and/or who liven up a table and make it more entertaining. If I win a big pot, I tip a few extra bucks. If I get stacked, I might still pull a couple of bucks out for the dealer.
If I run into a dealer who just sucks, or is an a-hole, I usually tell the floor/supervisor and then just leave. I have no patience for inept/rude dealers. They do not get my tips and the rooms/casinos who hire them lose my business. |

Re: I\'m thinking of instituting a new tipping policy
Instead of starting a new thread about this and getting banned, I'll just tack on this question here.
What can a dealer possibly do if you don't tip them? Tipping seems to be so -EV to me. At a restaurant, if you don't tip, they'll start spitting in your food, or shunning you for refills. But, a dealer can't do anything like that at a poker table. Is there any repercussion for not tipping at all? Can a poker room throw you out for not tipping? |
