Default Codecs

I just reformatted my computer and I have some videos(some porn but mostly not) that worked before and don't work now. The reason is cause I don't have the right codecs, right? The only problem is that I don't know how to find out what codecs the videos use. How can I find this? Is there a list of popular codecs? I'm talking both audio and video cause some files have video but no audio and vica versa.

splashpot - there is a popular application named gspot that is freeware (at least it was when I used it) that will tell you the codec of most files and then its a matter of downloading them..

as far as video forums fwiw the big names I have used are doom9 and afterdawn.com

are these legal videos? since video files have the capability of being pirated movies, before giving advice on this subject we would need to know whether your videos are of a dubious nature or not. discussion of things potentially pirateable is expressly forbidden.
