this punishment seems quite harsh

No way. As a matter of fact, I think it's too lenient.

The Patriots get fined $250,000. Whoop-dee-doo. Bob Kraft is a multi-billionaire. That's nothing more than a drop in the bucket.

BB gets $500,000. That's definitely stiff. But he makes $4 million per year. Definitely harsh though.

Pats lose a first round if they make the playoffs: big deal. They have two first round draft picks and the Niners probably aren't making the playoffs. Hell, they might have a top 10 pick for all we know.

Second and third round picks are peanuts as well.

The punishment should have been:

$500,000 fine against the Patriots
Suspend BB for 4 games
Lose both first round draft picks

Bob,

This is the harshest penalty in the history of the NFL. Losing a 1st round pick is unprecedented.

Do you think this is the worst cheating that has ever gone on in the NFL?

When thought about in historic terms, and compared to the penalties previous cheaters have got, I don't see how anyone could call this lenient.

Quite harsh? People want to crucify Bonds, and I think this is easily worse than anything Bonds is accused of.

the fact that they were warned recently is what makes this such a big deal. the penalty is appropriate

Riciculous comparison. Bonds has not been found guilty of anything by MLB and as such has not been punished. But if you're comparing the Patriots punishment to an actual crucifixtion, then yeah i see your point.

I have no problem with people arguing that the penalty is appropriate given the above.

however, I do have a problem with people saying "it should have been much worse". it just doesn't come close to jiving with the penalties that the 49ers, Broncos, and Steelers got for cheating that was arguably just as bad.

Those penalties should have been much worse. They are in the past. Furthermore, salary cap cheating isn't headline generating material - so PR-wise it made sense to sweep those under the rug.

On field cheating >>> off-field cheating. Now let's get the NFL to investigate the Cowboys' O-line spraying their jerseys with silicon in 1994...

and just to recap exact what those previous penalties were, all for "accounting irregularities with the salary cap"

49ers:
various fines totaling $1m

Forfeited Draft Picks:

* 2001 5th Round
* 2002 3rd Round

Broncos (2001):

Fines:

* $968,000 paid by the team

Forfeited Draft Pick:

* 2002 3rd Round

Broncos (2004):

Fines:

* $950,000 paid by the team
* $100,000 paid by an anonymous former player’s agent

Forfeited Draft Pick:

* 2005 3rd Round

Steelers (2000):

Salary Cap Hit:

* $400,000 counted against the team’s 2000 Salary Cap

Fines:

* $150,000 paid by the team

Forfeited Draft Pick:

* 2001 3rd Round

but the Patriots deserve to lose 2 first rounders and have the coach suspended. ok.
