Default Should Zidane be prosecuted for assualt?

IMO yes. Just because violent conduct takes place on a sport's field does not make it any less reprenhensible. In 1994 a Scottish player Duncan Ferguson did time in jail for assaulting a fellow player on a football field. Tyson should definitely have undergone a lengthy kail sentence for biting off part of Holyfield's ear. If one headbutted a fellow human being on the street, then doubtless the police would investigate. Zidane's flight back to France should be delayed.

Normally people competing in sports assume the risk of the sport. However when the action goes beyond the bounds of consent then they can defintely be liable. I don't know how aggressive they will get b/c it was his head and the shot was to the chest, but I do agree that it was completely bs and should be punished accordingly.

This was ugly, but comes nowhere close to warranting an assault charge. If he headbutted him in the face I may feel differently.

Also, consider how many years of soccer and headers made him that strong in that area. Thus inflicting a lot of pain on him and right in the middle of the chest as well.

I'm thinking this is why he hit him in the chest instead of the face. If he had headbutted him in the head with that much power, the guy wouldn't have had much of a face left, and charges definitely would have been pressed. As it is, he's just a classless d-bag who should have just taken whatever the guy said in stride. Instead, he got ticked off, and he will be served with a hefty fine from FIFA. Hell, Rooney got $4,000 for what he did. This is going to cost Zidane more then $10,000 probably.

This is a guy who has scored 2 headed goals in World Cup final (and also hit the bar once). I'm pretty sure I could hurt you by headbutting your upper chest, and I'm 100% sure Zidane could have you in serious pain.

I think the argument against prosecuting players like Zidane is that the sport polices itself. Zidane will get suspended from international play (though he was retiring anyway), and will get fined.

If the player he head-butted had gotten severely injured, the story might be different, though.
