Cannot connect to aim/email using wireless

Hi all, I've recently hooked up an airport base station in my dorm room. The internet on it works fine when browsing safari (15'' Macbook Pro with 2.33 Intel Core Duo and OS X 10.5) however whenever I try to connect to AIM it times out, and my mail program flat out won't connect to my .mac account or my school email (both of which work fine when plugged directly in to the internet).

For reference, to set up our internet we have to plug into the wall and then go to a website and activate our connection once per year using our school login/password. Same thing for wireless. I've done that and am fine in that department.

Any help would be much appreciated, if you need any more information I will check this post frequently. Thank you all very much.
