hoop dreams makes these lists because it is filmed over such a long period of time. i think it gets the nod more for its "ground breaking uniqueness" than for the actual story which i found to be really boring/predictable.

I haven't seen anyone mention (apologies if I missed it) these three, which would all be in my top ten list:

1. Naked (Mike Leigh)(1993).
2. My Sex Life Life (Or How I Got Into An Argument) (Arnaud Desplechin)(1996).
3. Metropolitan (Whit Stillman) (1990).

Yeah, it's pretty predictable since you had never really heard of either of them when the movie came out. What's your point?

No, not really. Hoop Dreams makes the list because it is a goddamn brilliant film. And personally I thought the story was anything but boring or predictable.

Not sure it makes my top ten, but no one has mentioned As Good as It Gets? Perhaps I'm just a sucker for the feel good movies. Also, since people are mentioning some comedies, Big Lebowski is up there for me.
