I'm going to be going to Laughlin in a couple of weekends. It's been a couple of years since I went last. Does the River Palms still have a decent NLHE tournament on Friday nights? I recall it being something around $125 buy in, with a decent structure.

Any tournaments I should look for on Saturdays and/or Sundays?

The best tournaments are at the River Palms. If you are there a day or 2 before the Fri tournament you can probably buy a seat for about $50 instead of paying the regular price.

Randy, don't they have a new one on Saturday? $200 buy-in or something?

I've gotten out of tournament play, so I don't follow the decent ones anymore.

I think that is just once a month. It was once a month as of about 3 weeks ago.

I stayed at the Colorado Belle about a year ago, and I played Friday night and Saturday in their room. Friday night they had a 2/5 NLH game going, which I played for a few hours until about 2am. I don't play a ton of NL so I don't have much to compare it to. I lost three buyins, getting my money in good each time (no bad beat stories, don't worry).

On Saturday I joined their regular weekend crowd for 10/20 LHE. At the time (April 2006), the game went every Saturday. I played most of that Saturday, and it varied from full ring to shorthanded, and finally broke around midnight or so. I did well in this game. There was a 4/8 game running the whole time as well, which I switched to after the 10 game broke.

Both games (the limit and NL) were goldmines. If you have generally good command of poker concepts, you don't have to be any kind of NL (or limit) specialist to do well in the games. Both games were almost as good as the California games I'm accustomed to.

I know you asked specifically about NL, but I thought I'd mention the 10/20 limit game because there was more money on that table than there would be in a 1/2 NL game, and the players were bad.

I'm not sure if these games are still going or not.

Also, there was a room-wide BBJ going. Somebody lost with Aces full vs. Quads on another table, and they spread the $30k jackpot around the whole room (except for the poor folks playing stud). Our room share was like $400.

Oh, and don't mention the Belle to Felicia Lee.

I agree with Felicia about the Colorado Belle. I played there once in a tournament. I won the tournament and the experience was still bad enough that I won't be playing there in the future.

In the summer, most cardrooms are slow, except on the weekends, but the play, wow. Lots of Californians coming in, with disposable incomes.

A couple of weeks ago at Riverside we had a 2/5 blind NLHE game with about 15k on the table. Last year was the biggest game I've seen in Laughlin, ever. A guy who owns a car dealership in California, or something, and some race cars, he said. Only in his late 20's, but supposedly going through a divorce and drinking heavily. Of course that brought out every guy with two nickels to rub together within a 60-mile radius. Real estate guys, another guy who owns a motorcycle shop, a guy with a horse ranch. At one point I counted almost 50k on the table. I sat there with $500 and a prayer every time I pushed. The car guy was raising blind $100 pre-flop.

Laughlin can have some good games. It's not like Commerce, where one can just show up knowing it's going to be good, but when it happens, it's magic.

Around town it is said that they are going to go through some major changes with the change of ownership. Just a rumor, but whatever happens, can't make it any worse.

Sorry, Felicia, I'm just trying to answer the OP's question, not out to ruin your action. But hey, newsflash, people are generally really bad at poker.

I understand though. I just about never mention my dinky local cardroom around here. It's just too sweet a spot to blab about.
