Nobody, especially a top notch closer, gives a [censored] about being the setup man to an old HOF closer.

are level records being broken here?

being a setup man for an old HOF is one thing. winning the closer job from the best ever is another. top notch closers actually like challenge and competition. especially if they are paid well.

The question is still silly. The position of every GM should be that every player is available in the right deal -- but some are far more available than others.

Santana: I wouldn't do the deal because -- as I understand it -- he will not sign a contract until he tests the free agrent market.

I have serious questions about Cabrera and I don't think I would give up two current starting players (including a top five second baseman) for him. (I am not sure what Tejada's contract situation is.)

from rotoworld.com:

According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees met Tuesday with the Marlins about Miguel Cabrera, but balked at an asking price that is said to include either Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy.
"No one is untouchable, but some guys are less touchable than others, and those guys fall into that category," general manager Brian Cashman said. "I will be tested a lot and this organization will be tested a lot on that." The newspaper suggests that the Yankees could instead offer up outfielder Jose Tabata or young arms like Alan Horne, Humberto Sanchez and Ross Ohlendorf.

Yeah, I don't see it. Why would the Marlins get Tabata? They desperately need someone who is MLB ready if they are going to sell off Cabrera.

Hughes or Chamberlain has to go in that deal.

I love Kennedy but I would do Kennedy, Melky and Tabata for Cabrera in a heartbeat.

that's crazy. this opens up so many holes.

all of a sudden, the yankees need another starter, a competent center fielder, as well as someone in the ranks who can get called up just in case. plus you've got a defensive liability at third base, who is probably moving to first base, which is already log-jammed. but you do get quite a bit of offense in return.

that's like the days of 2005.

actually, i'd love for cabrera to be on the yankees, but i'd definitely put in the "weigh-in" clause in his contract, a la bloody socks.

I don't see where this opens up so many holes. I think you are putting a little too much value into Melky.

To be able to acquire an absolute STUD third baseman for

1)a CF who's two years have produced OPS+'s of 95 and 89, with not much hope of power developing in the future

2)a middle-back of the rotation guy in an organization filled with potential pitching prospects, and which has the ability to sign high-priced FA's

3)an outfield prospect who hasn't shown power OR even reached AA yet

I think it's a good deal.

Edit - I just re-read your post. Were you implying that Tabata could possibly be called up "just in case"? He would be absolutely humiliated if he was to be called up at any time next year, let alone the next 2-3 years. Also, I understand that it opens up a spot in the starting rotation, but that spot right now is being held by a high 80's, low 90's pitcher who has had less than 5 starts in his MLB career. I think it's a decent risk to take.
