Make sure you obtain enough real life information to take to the police: name, address, telephone number. Exchange e-mails so that both of you are clear what the deal is, and so it is clear to the police that one party did not follow through on the arrangements.

Google and Twoplustwo Search on the other party's name. Scan back through this thread, as numbers of alleged scammers have been named and shamed, but they may still be posting here. How long someone has been posting here doesn't seem to matter to some of the scammers, so don't use just that information as a gauge of honesty. If in doubt, ask here first. Only transfer in amounts you can afford to lose to a scammer.
