Default Javalin in judges foot. - Not for squeamish

Haven't seen any video of this, but you'd have to wonder if there is a better way to keep track of where the Javalin lands then having judges on the field. I'm sure people remember seeing that one judge a few years back getting one in the chest.

You'd think stuff like this might happen more often given how fast the javalin is being thrown.

(Track and field line judge Lia Mara Lourenco is helped after a javelin hit her in her foot during 'Brazil Trophy,' a national track and field competition)

you'd think someone would have had the decency to pull it out before they could snap a picture. She's kind of lucky that didn't land somewhere more serious.

1) you don't pull out things that have impaled someone - you could do serious damage or even kill the person - wait for the EMT.

2) I seriously doubt anyone would call her "lucky."

I'm curious to hear from an EMT view, I could see leaving it in certain circumstances, but regarding the foot, it seems like it's going to be diffiucult to help her until you get that thing out.

Lucky is relative, a javelin could have done considerably more damage if she was standing one or two feet in a different direction, as it is it looks like she'll just have to have a cast on her foot, and hopefully no complicated ligament damage.

Everything I have ever heard, read, or learned about basic first aid is to stabilize puncture wounds of any kind and seek medical aid.
