Semi-Interesting Match History

[APXG]

CW asked me to post a hand history a while ago - this one is pretty meh, but I only get to play a couple HU SNGs per week nowadays and most are even more routine. Some of the decisions should definitely generate a little discussion, as well as some WTF replies [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img].

Sorry, don't know how to use converters - I've read so many of these over the past few months that I think I prefer them uncoverted by now anyway.

I've never seen villain before, and he has pretty donkish Sharkscope stats (down ~5k in mostly small to mid stakes) but is somehow a 10% ROI winner at the $200 level. I'd say he wasn't awful, but pretty predictable and definitely beatable at least 2/3 of the time in standard format. In retrospect after losing, I guess I could've done some small things differently if I prepared better, but I doubt I'd question anything had I won.

Ok... hand 3: You have AA, get another A on the flop, don't be the turn, then fold the river to a pot-sized bet when you are ahead of every hand except 45 or QT. Am I misreading this? WTF?

Yeah. This hand bothered me too. I'm betting that turn about 95% of the time, or more. He liked his hand enough to call the flop. There a lot of draws that can beat me by giving a free card. I probably have the best hand. So I bet.

I also agree that folding the river is waayyyyy to weak-tight for HU play. Maybe I fold this if I have a really great read on him for only betting the nuts (even when I show this much weakness) but NEVER fold this on hand #3 to someone I don't know.

AA - The turn check is for pot control(still lots of time, and I don't know opponent). I have no reason to believe he's tricky / big donk at this point. This flop provides tremendous transparency given these assumptions. His most likely holding is a flush draw, followed by straight draw, and then a K (he folds it some % of the time). He raises the flop and / or bets turn with bottom set. Air is more limited in this spot than in any other PFR situation b.c a)A-high flops are the least floated and b)he has less reason to float here than essentially any other time b.c its early and he can't feel threatened yet.

The turn is an awful card, obviously, and I am NEVER stacking off w/o specific info this early here. In a marginal spot, I am only going to risk a block of chips that I consider inconsequential against a specific opponent. Therefore, we cannot bet, as a check-raise not only kills our 10 outs, but also allows us to be taken off the best hand by KxXd or some other diamond.

A big part of the river is the timing - literally an instapot bet. Considering formerly stated info, this is either a bluff or flush / straight. However, there is essentially nothing to bluff with. Even QJ isn't going to pot it here as it can now snapcall. My decision was essentially instant, because the hand was very clear like I said - I just took some time to make sure I didn't misread the board, etc.


The others I'll try to go through quickly -

KQ - unlike the AA, this was a very tough decision and I essentially timed out before making the call. Now I actually think it may be incorrect, even though I clearly thought his range was full of $hit, but I need to be correct here a HUGE % of the time for it to be +$ev(its a vital block of chips), so its very tricky. I essentially set up an awesome bluff spot for my opponent, and I'd instasnap with AK, but he's got a ton of A's in his range I don't beat.

53s is standard for the style I was playing here. Very few people are tricky enough to bluff-raise rivers here, and this guy does it essentially never.

65s - not sure why I decided to limp - I'd say its like 50/50. I think I just didn't have an argument for raising, so I limped. I essentially always limp when I don't have reasons to do otherwise, but maybe I just overlooked them here.

Q3o was an any-2 spot brought on by betting patterns where I didn't think he'd play a big pot w/o a hand. I'm betting 100% of flops if he calls.

92o - This guy never gave me any reason to fold button

84 - My 25/50 steal size does seem a little big, but the goal of the raise is to separate his range - make him "think" for a second before calling. OOP this info is absolutely crucial for properly gauging his reaction to my flop autobet. This is highly related to 6max SB 3betting theory, which is pretty complex. No 100bb stacks here tho.

T7s - I'm raising a huge range against this guy(air 3bet range = 0), essentially anything semi-marginal. I don't think there's any chance I'd limp this in this specific spot.

77 - Interesting hand. Check flop, fold (this specific)turn is a pretty bad line though. If I thought he'd bluff river any substantial amount, I'd fold turn as played, but I'd also bet flop to get a turn checkthrough most of the time. That way I get to the river for ~175. If he check-call leads, its an easy fold as I am not losing essentially any draw equity (only 2 outs), and my made hand is obviously no good. Maybe I'd call turn lead if it was a reppable card, but thats getting off topic b.c this opponent is not the repping type.

Basically, checking the flop here is SLIGHTLY better than betting, b.c I'm collecting on bluff value on the turn (if I draws don't hit). But I can only collect if he abandons the bluff, because I cannot call a river bet. So I can only do this is against an opponent who doesn't think hands through, and is in general a vagina. Otherwise I just get blown off the hand. So if as the turn card hit, this guy got up and Phil Ivey took his seat, yes I would fold the turn.

I would've called the AAA, folded the KQ-high, and been willing to get allin with the 77 on flop/turn.
