Funny thing is, exit polling showed Edwards would have been re-elected easily in NC, but he couldnt help Kerry out at all.

I think they contribute somewhat to the campaign atmosphere on a subconscious level in voters minds, but I'd imagine a voter's opinion of the VP very very rarely changes their vote. It'll be interesting to see the situation post-Cheney. The entertainment and news media has made the public aware that Cheney has tremendous influence, rather than being just another smiling statue who does little but wait for an assassination.
