Default L.A. for a month

Going to the LA Poker Classic in February and since I'm not from the US, I don't really know much about the city.
Does anyone have any recommendations on places to live during this 1 month period? Looking för a house or apartment in LA, preferably in a place with some cool restaurants, bars, etc... will be renting a car, so it doesn't have to be very close to Commerce. Actually, I absolutely DON'T want to live close to commerce. The area around the casino sucks real bad.
Anyway, been looking at Venice Beach and Santa Monica. What do you guys think?

Chinatown in San Gabriel and Monetary park is a cool place to go to, a lot of great Chinese foods, and a lot of stuff you can buy that you can't buy anywhere else, such as the latest cellphone, Chinese art, weird stuff and so on.

I might be doing this as well, and if I do, it would definitely be in Santa Monica.

Get a place down in Manhattan or Hermosa Beach. Those towns almost make the LA area worth living in. If I ever have to move down there, that's where I'm buying my next house.

Venice is terrible.

Venice is a bit scungy, Santa Monica has some really nice areas but it's expensive. And a helluva trip to Commerce.

Sucker's suggestion makes sense.

From Hermosa/Manhattan, it's like 45 minutes to and from Commerce without traffic. From Santa Monica it's 20 minutes on the 10. Plus, you don't have to deal with 405 traffic.

I lived in Hermosa Beach and I loved it, but it is not much different from Santa Monica and certainly not worth the extra commute. If OP wanted to spend time on the beach rather than go to the casino, then it would make a lot more sense as Hermosa/Manhattan beaches are awesome. But if he wants beach, Malibu might be a better choice.

Pretty funny that you are saying Santa Monica is better from a transportation perspective when everyone else is saying the opposite. I have no idea.

About the weather, though, how is the weather in february? Like 50-60 degrees?

Appreciate all suggestions. Thanks.

long beach is close and might be for you.

overall if you are playing alot of poker its better to sleep close to the games as you dont want an hours drive back to your room each day. and in l.a. you cant go anywhere during four hours of each rush hour.
