I recently moved from the Mission to the West Portal area, and have to admit that it's a greatly underloved area. While it's true that the wheather is a bit worse than that of the Mission / P. Hill / China Basin - the area has quite a bit to offer. From arguably the best Burger in the city at Bullshead to great sando's at the Sub Center to world class golf at Harding Park - there's quite a bit out that way. Not to mention I live in a 3 story house with a great backyard and TONS of both parking and storage for only $650 / mo. for the master bedroom.

Quite happy w. the area.

Has anyone tried out Nihon Whisky Lounge?

Anyone into getting a few 2p2'ers together there?

Overall, another great Danko experience. This is definitely my favorite high-end dining place in SF.

Love Gary Danko!
Have you tried Michael Mina? Any suggestions for other high-end dining?

i took the girlfriend to range on valencia the other night. the desserts are really top notch, and i though the food was pretty good too. pretty awesome value for a restaurant with a michelin star---about $100 total for us both to have 3 courses and wine.

Yes, it's a pretty cool, mellow but upscale spot. Great whiskey selection. Usually not too busy. It's worth checking out.

Taraz: Favorite spot to eat in the East Bay by FAR is Zachary's Pizza (1853 Solano Ave). Incredible deep dish pizza. Must try.

Also - as you're a hoops fan - if you want to get the best pick up games in the bay area, jump on 680 and head out towards the Bollinger Canyon courts. It's a bit of a drive, but you won't be disappointed.

agreed for the pie.

my bro used to live on solano and i used to make the daily walk up to zachary's. there is a gourmet burger place nearby that is good too, but the name escapes me.

snipes you ever each at chez panisse? that is the best place to eat in the east bay. J.

Snipe,

I was just there Friday night. It’s a nice little spot, but nothing special IMHO.

The bottom floor has some tables/couches, and a fair amount of standing room. There is a top floor, but I think you need table res to sit up there.

According to the people I was with, the specialty drink menu was decent. I am more of a beer guy and stuck an Okinawan import beer I took a liking to. I did see some people eating, but didn’t order food myself.

They had some resident DJs spinning some house and hip hop when I was there.

The service was meh, and there are only two uni-sex bathroom stalls in the entire place.

I tried this place a couple weeks ago. Great suggestion Indiana.

I showed up with a party of 8 on a busy night and the couple that own the place were extremely accommodating. They pulled a bunch of random tables and chairs together even though they were "full". The food was ridiculously flavorful and delicious. I highly recommend it if you like Ethiopian food.
