Default Where to Start and How Much? Part 2

I guess my earlier post gave everyone a good laugh....

Maybe I wasn't quite specific enough.....

If I start out at the microlimit games, say .5-1.00 what should I start out with at the table with? 2x, 5x, 10x the upper limit or somthing else?

Glad all the posters got a good laugh.... as I mentioned I'm still learning...

Thanks

Yes I think 0.50/1 would be a good place for you to start. You'll need a bankroll of at least 400 dollars though. I would want more.

Once you have played 50-60 thousand hands at this level and can win on average 1-2 big bets every hundred hands, then you can think about moving up to the next level.

I personally always sit at a limit table with 50 big bets. At 0.5/1 this is 50 bucks. That is what I would sit down with at that level. However, all you usually 'need' to sit down at a standard limit table is 12 big bets. This would allow you to cap every street of a hand if you happen to get a royal flush, four of a kind, or any other hand you think is good. Any less than 12 big bets at a table is evil.

I'm going to disagree with Allday on a few things. First I will agree with him that starting out at .50/1 isn't a bad place to start your poker career and the amount of money he recomends is a bit on the high end, you could get away with as low as 200, but I would say 300 would do you just right.

Where I disagree is in the number of hands you should play before moving up in limits. I started out at the .25/.50 limit tables with 100 dollars and played probably 60k hands in a year while moving up in limits as my bankroll and comfort level increased. Make sure you have the maturity to move back down in levels if you find yourself over your head. And never quit learning, or asking questions. You've got to start somewhere.

Please, keep asking. In case you haven't noticed yet, poker players tend to be ... "annoying" Ignore that

300 BBs is a good start. So for 0.5/1 you could get away with some $300. Just play more tight and don't push very small edges to keep your variance low. (ie. with a flush draw on the flop and not much else, you could cap it with 4 players because you have an equity edge. However, you don't win _that_ much by doing this, and it will increase your variance. You might as well just call if your bankroll is not yet deep enough. Though this does not mean you should play passively in general!) Also, don't play too many tables immediately. Concentrate on just two for example. 500 BB would also be a good start for higher levels. In case you take a 300 BB drop, you still have 400 BB to step back one level. So as soon as you have $1000, you should definitely move up to 1/2 (you can do it sooner probably, at like $800)

Scal,

The standard buy-in at a limit table is 25BBs.

$0.5/1 - $25 buy-in
$1/2 - $50 buy-in
$2/4 - $100 buyin

etc...

When you say a safe amount is 300 BBs... does this mean Big Blinds, or the total of the blinds?

I have worked my bankroll up from $124 to $240 in the last 2-3 days playing NO LIMIT full ring cash games for the first time at the $0.10/$0.20 level...

Should I be able to move up to the next level of $0.25/$0.50?

Sorry for such a n3wb question.

BBs is big bets, not big blinds (which is a SB, small bet)

Okay, but I still don't know what you mean by 'Big Bets'? What value does this equate to so I can do calculations. An example would be extremely useful.

Thank you.

gmac,

This is a limit poker forum. When we refer to BBs - we're talking about Big Bets which, in limit poker, is 2 times the size of the big blind.

Example: If we're playing $2/4 limit holdem:

- The Small Blind is $1
- The Big Blind is $2
- A Small Bet (SB) is $2
- A Big Bet (BB) is $4

I believe that NL bankrolls are based on buy-ins - not BBs. If you're concerned about bankroll for NL games - you should post in the NL Forums.
