he could have a straight draw, a set, 2 pair or nothing.

His bet makes no sense, as this is a board he would expect you to bet regardless.

In this circumstance it is best to let him bet / bluff through to the river and in this case raise the river.

This way you make the most money and lose the least. If he has a strong draw or flopped 2 pair / a set he won't be going anywhere if you raise the turn. I would raise the river. He will most probably call even if he has 2 pair or a set rather than raise as it looks like you slowplayed a monster. It is profitable to raise the turn but more profitable to wait till the river to raise.

Oh I'd definitely raise this flop. then if he bets into you on the turn calling it down is ok. Otherwise I'd bet the turn myself regardless.

damm sorry, misread - i must learn to read the board and pay attention lol.

ignore my advice - play the way i said to play if there is an ace in that flop, otherwise raise the flop for sure

Also, in general, if you would raise the river it's preferable to raise the turn instead. It's almost never correct to just call the turn and raise the river.

Turns out he called me with A8os and caught the turn for 2 pair. I had the sinking feeling I was beat on the turn. Despite my New Year's Resolution I called anyways.

I agree with that, but in a situation similar to this, when you get a strange bet heads up, i believe you get more value by waiting to the river to raise.

Btw, OP, don't feel bad, you had top pair with a great kicker in a blind steal situation. Of course you call down. And you got there cheaply. Well done.

I think this is certainly a turn raise, and I think it is important to understand why this hand would not qualify for a Delayed River Raise play as discussed in my post from earlier today.

Dont think this was a blind steal situation as UTG was in the hand. Id fold on the flop.
