Burning calories walking vs. running
A friend of mine told me that you would burn the SAME amount of calories walking 3 miles as you would jogging 3 miles.
Assume walk is at 16min/mile pace and jog is at 9min/mile, or whatever. My friend cannot be right, can he? If not, what is a good estimate of the ratio? |

Googled: Walking vs. Running
Here's the answer from Dr. Dean Ornish, a clinical professor of medicine at UC San Francisco: "All things being equal, you will burn more calories by running an hour than walking an hour. It is true that walking a mile will burn more calories then running a mile -- although it takes longer to do so. When you run a mile, you're burning mostly sugar, or carbohydrates, which is how your body gives you fast energy in bursts. When you walk a mile, it gives your metabolism time to switch from burning carbohydrates to burning fat." I don't feel like searching for it but if you google V02 max and calories burned you can probably find the formula you are looking for. |

They're almost the exact same.

Re: Burning calories walking vs. running
It's depressing because after you run you think you've worked so hard, yet you have burned as many calories as the 80 year olds walking around the track at the local gym. :-(

Re: Burning calories walking vs. running
But those 80-year-olds would have to walk for like three times as long as you'd have to run. So you are still working hard. I don't get this at all.

Re: Burning calories walking vs. running
1 hour walk = 20 minute run. seems logical.
