I love how people are like ZOMG Yankees lost Arod...destined to finish last in division for next 10 years.

the yankees are an 84 win team without a-rod this year. don't give me any [censored] about 'oh they lost in 1st round who cares' - it's important. the yankees will have a very difficult time making up those wins.

No, its more like ZOMG, the Yanks lost ARod, have alienated their free agents and are relying on a pitching staff of rookies and fifty-year olds. They could easily finish third.

I know you're pissed that the Sox are winning and ARod left, but try not being a jackass.

Triumph,
Assuming they get a replacement level third baseman it's 10 wins. Hughes + Joba should add a lot.
Edit: But running bad or a worse offseason can definitely turn them into that type of team.

The market value of ARod is much different for each team. The Yankees, with the YES network, value him the most.

Kudos to Cashman, if he sticks to his guns.

[/ QUOTE ]

The Yankees do not value hm the most at all. They are not going to lose TV ratings or attendance, given where they are financially with the new stadium and YES, they are rolling in money. Arod obviously does not want to play in New York anymore, it would be absurd for him to turn down an extension offer and then turn around and demand 10 years. And I can't blame him for not wanting to play here anymore, he was treated like [censored]. Boras is going to make some moonshattering offer that is predicated on Arod adding tens of millions of dollars a year in revenues to a team because of his marketing value. And some owner is going to agree and pay him in all likelihood, and what most people view as overpaying will actually be a good deal. But from an economic perspective the Yankees don't need him more than other teams at all. On the field that may very well be different, but really things have been consistently terrible since he got here and its a relief.

People who think Boras does a disservce to his clients are [censored] morons. He is not tricking them into making bad decisions, that is absurdly stupid. He is the best agent by a huge, huge mile, he gives his clients what they want better than anyone else.

No one's saying they'll finish last, but they're going to have a hard time making up for his production.

heard the same about hughes this year, what was his WARP? I realize he got injured, but injuries happen - and joba and hughes will be on strict pitch and inning counts all year. without a strong bullpen, the yankees will have trouble closing things out.

Clemens, Desalvo, Wright, Henn, Moose, who else did we start that sucked balls..i know there were others.

We lose Clemens + Arod which is like 35-40 million.
Giambi comes off the books next year.

Hughes, Kennedy, Chamberlain..essentially rookies yes but thye have showed they can handle NYC..short of bugs. And they are far far more talented then what we had previously.

Add the Yanks aquiring thru trade or FO another solid starter/bullpen and I'll ride with that.

Only way Rivera or Posada leave NYC is if they decide they no longer want to wear pinstripes cuz no one will offer mor money to them then Yankees.

Yanks have already decided to pick up Abreu's option.

Our starting rotation in 09 could be(though not likely) Wang, Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy, Sanchez which costs us less than 1/2 of Arod's salary this year.

no Giambi, Abreu, Damon, Andy...jesus how much salary gone is that?
