Default 25NL overpair on paired board facing check raise on river

Party Poker, $0.10/$0.25 NL Hold'em Cash Game, 6 Players
LegoPoker Hand History Converter

BTN: $101.91
SB: $40.18
Hero (BB): $57.40
UTG: $23.58
MP: $34.58
CO: $25.30

Pre-Flop: J J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] dealt to Hero (BB)
UTG calls $0.25, 3 folds, SB calls $0.15, Hero raises to $1.50, UTG calls $1.25, SB folds

Flop: ($3.25) 2 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 Players)
Hero bets $2.50, UTG calls $2.50

Turn: ($8.25) 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 Players)
Hero checks, UTG checks

River: ($8.25) 6[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 Players)
Hero bets $4, UTG raises to $12.75, Hero

I guess my reason for the small river bet was a cross between value and probe. The check on the turn kind combined with the preflop call led me to think he could easily have 88 or 99 and there's pretty much nothing I beat except for TT.

How could I have played this better?

Oh, villain is 56/11/1 if that's any help. Which I guess means I could add 89 or A9 or something to his pfr.

bet the turn. Theres 138382983 draws and he could easily have an 8, a 2, or some other PP...Axo even. You lost a ton of value there.

You can fold the river...i dont think you have him beat here often enough to call.

unless you've seen villain bluff river before, I think you can safely fold here. Villain may think your bet is weak, because it is, but a villain with aggression factor of 1 doesn't check raise here often enough for this to be a bluff call, and with a paired board, you're behind to essentially everything :S

As a slight aside, I think after the turn check/check I would resolve to check/calling a small bet here, the 6 clearly didn't improve your hand as it is unlikely that you raised $1.5 from the SB with 66, so an observant UTG will know that, and combined with the weak bet will know that you can likely be taken off your hand

I would bet the turn too. What is the size of your bet? What's your plan for river if called, if a, river is a blank b, scare card?
