Re: Raising all the pairs.
[ QUOTE ]
can you link me to the 5-10% thread. [/ QUOTE ] Q: I've heard other posters mentioning the 5/10 rule. What is it? A: The 5/10 rule is an important no-limit concept that first appeared in Bob Ciaffone's excellent book, "PL & NL Poker." To quote directly from the book: "When contemplating calling a raise because your position is good, you have a clear call if the raise is less than 5% of your stack, and a clear fold if it is more than 10%. In between those numbers, use your judgement." It's a good rule for calling a preflop raise with a pocket pair in hopes of hitting a set. The driving force behind the concept is the implied odds in a given situation. If you get your set, but the opponent only has 5BBs after the initial raise, calling to hit the set in the first place is incorrect. http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...Number=3268411 |

Ok, so you guys call up to 10% exactly and fold if it is 11%? [/ QUOTE ] Why do people always think the 5/10 rule dictates an autocall if the raise is <=10% of effective stacks? There's a reason it isn't called the "10 rule" ... |

Re: Raising all the pairs.
You need to consider your chances of getting paid off. In general don't call re-raises from LAGs that calm down postflop.

Re: Raising all the pairs.
Stop taking this so literally. Its not a hard and fast rule just a guidelines. You need to consider the effective stack in play, your opponents tendencies, your chances of hitting your hand, the chance you'll carry on with the hand and still lose and finally make a +EV decision.
It happens to work out that you can usually call getting 20:1 odds (5%) and rarely call getting < 10:1 (10%) but you need to understand why this is not just apply the result. Especially because almost all your decisions will fall within the 5%-10% range anyway. |

Re: Raising all the pairs.
Yeah i view it as the 8 - 1 rule:
If my opponents stack behind is at least 8x his raise (or reraise) and I am equally deep, If I think that he has a bigger PP, If I think that he will probably commit his whole stack if I hit my set, Then I call. |

Re: Raising all the pairs.
I think a lot of players overestimate their implied odds in this situation. I was doing it until I recently started to think more critically about it. It doesn't matter how much your opponent has behind if he isn't willing to put it into the pot. You must thing about the type of player that has re-raised you before calling.
Assuming stack sizes are large enough, if villain is: Loose preflop / weak-tight postflop = fold Tight preflop / aggressive postflop = call Passive preflop = call Obviously there are more but these are some general guidelines I've been using. |

Re: Raising all the pairs.
why would u want to fold if their loose/preflop/weak-tight postflop
you can outplay them alot of pots postflop if thier this way why wouldn't you call? and what says that they cant hit flops hard when you hit them harder? i dont catch ur logic |

Re: Raising all the pairs.
Something I am trying to work into my game is to actually FOLD the baby pairs UTG, only bringing them back in as a raise in later position! Radical I know but I like the initial results.
