i kind of fear that it will all but die out as soon as the old players start to die off. out of all my friends that play poker, none of them have any interest in learning omaha.

it's good in the short term because most of them suck real bad. but it doesnt look good for the long run.

I've seen the popularity of live O8 go way up around my city. It used to be one or two tables twice a week at one local card room. Now O8 nights pack people in, with 3 or 4 tables not uncommon, and other card rooms have started spreading it.

I taught a friend of mine to play, and now every time he goes out of town to hang with friends or family, he teaches them, and he swear they enjoy it. I keep thinking he's pulling a prank on me...

Just wondering ... why are Omaha players so old? Apparently the game didn't even exist 25 years ago, at least not in its present form. So it's not like the old folks grew up with it. Was Omaha insanely popular when it was introduced?

One big problem with poker in the 21st century is that hold'em has squeezed out everything else. When O8 and other variants are given a platform to succeed and a little pushing, they find an audience (even with the young HE only players) -- the problem is that you need the platform and the patience and why should anyone invest seriously in either (in a live setting, at least) when HE is such a cash cow.

IMHO, O8 is popular with the geezers because there is much less aggression than NLHE and even LHE. Low-limit O8 players often criticize others for frequent PF raises. They just want a friendly family-pot game. They also want to be able to draw a lot and make huge suckouts on the river. They mostly played stud/stud8 before they played O8, where they learned to love chasing.

I think the younger generation loves poker for the chance to make aggressive plays. Will they ever want to play no-foldem O8, where bluffing is almost futile?
