In Stud, if I am dealt 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] and you are dealt 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], I am bringing in. Clubs are considered to be the 'lowest' ranked suit for this purpose, and it's the only time I can think of it being relevant in poker.

or in drawing for button, seats, etc.

I thought the rankings were something along the lines of Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, Clubs. Red-black-red-black.

In stud if you have the spade royal vs. a heart royal, the hearts win.. Correct?

Not sure how common this joke is outside of Aus, but since we're talking suits:

You need a [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] to love her,
A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] to marry her,
A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] to beat her,
and a [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] to bury her.

spade - the sword
hearts - royalty
diamonds - aristocrats
clubs - peasants

[/ QUOTE ]

This isn't true, and I haven't seen the correct answer posted yet, so:

spade = royalty
heart = clergy
diamond = merchant
club = peasant

The spade is a dagger, which stabs the heart in order to get the diamond. The club is just a [censored] sitting there watching, and the spade decides to [censored] him over so he stabs that little bitch too.

I remember reading something from a book, I think it was Big Deal by Anthony Holden, that stated what the suits represented. For example, spades=military, hearts=church. Anyone else recall this or know what each suit represents?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well poker is a French game that originally had 20 cards. Each card symbolized a position in their government. Spades = military, Hearts = politicians, Diamonds = Aristocrats, Clubs = common-folk. Only a guess.... might be wrong.
