Isura, what do you do in this hand, and what is your overall plan? It may seem simple, but I'm interested to know your thoughts. Do you bet the flop?

[ QUOTE ]
Villain is loosish, but I don't know much else.

SB: $103.55
BB: $98.50
UTG: $83.76
MP: $211.93
Hero (CO): $121.47
BTN: $75.43

Preflop: Hero is dealt K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (6 Players)
2 folds, Hero raises to $4.00, BTN calls $4.00, 2 folds

Flop: ($9.03) 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 Players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $9.03, Hero ...

I like the flop check, especially with the K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. You don't mind seeing another diamond, and you aren't worried about free cards in this spot. The pot bet is often some random pocket pair, and less often Ax. Depends on his range PF...Try playing Ax this way sometimes to see how people play in this spot. I usually call and evaluate the turn. Sometimes I call 3 barrels here and show down the best hand.

you're in grad school. where? have you finished your degree? whats your undergrad, where? How long did you wait between undergrad and grad? Whats your life like as a math grad student? How much poker did you play during this period? Do you have an assistantship? Are you working part time at a real job? etc

[/ QUOTE ]

I was in grad school at U of Waterloo. But I now play poker (since this April). My undergrad was in computer engineering, and masters in math. I did my grad degree immediately after undergrad since I couldn't think of anything better (I sucked at poker and jobs weren't that attractive). Life as a grad student is quiet, but a LOT of work. Most of the time you work alone on homework, but it is more bearable if you meet up with classmates regularly to work on homework. I played about 25k hands per month during school..probably more than I should have. All students at my school were given adequate financial aid to live.

As an addition to the book question, how much application do you think ToP still has to today's standards of play at ssnl/msnl. In other words, do you think it's outdated to any extent, considering legislation and all?

[/ QUOTE ]

ToP is just to provoke you into thinking about certain concepts. Whether or not you come to the same conclusions as the author is secondary.

Quick calls on the flop are usually weakish draws or medium 1 pair hands. Slow calls are usually big draws, sometimes monsters (thinking about raising). Taking time to bet/raise at small stakes usually means they are thinking how much to bet to extract. Players tend to just fire something quickly if they are bluffing.

[/ QUOTE ]

LOL this is usually true but this read cost me $2000 yesterday

Plus mostg of ToP is based on limit games. A lot of it is still applicable to NL, but still, you have to be able to correctly apply it.

if you had a noob come to you and want to learn poker completely from scratch, what would be your suggested plan of attack?

In other words, how do you wish you had gone about learning to pwn?

What is the one thing you 'learned' that you wish you could 'unlearn'?
