Re: Doping (use of performance-enhancing drugs) in Poker
So if I just stick to online poker, I can still sit around smoking crack, snorting blow, [censored] hookers and crushing teh donkuments without worrying about Olivert's drug-free poker ramblings?

Re: Doping (use of performance-enhancing drugs) in Poker
Gamblers are SUPPOSED to be independent, radical individualists. submitting to drug tests and having a governing body oversee such tests is soooo UNpoker.
the game is supposed to have a fair amount of degeneracy in it. drugs, hookers, casually loaning/lending thousands of dollars, gambling your last dollar is arguably the cultural heart of the game. Ritalin and Adderall's respective parent companies should sponsor the hole card cam for espn's WSOP productions. If coke had a parent company, then it should sponsor the WSOP play of the day segment or whatever they have. Spearmint Rhino in turn could sponsor the bit where they go over the chip counts of all the players or the part where they bio some kid's poker journey. Throw in a payday loan sponsor, a condom sponsor, an abortion clinic sponsor and you capture the poker audience quite well i think. |

Re: Doping (use of performance-enhancing drugs) in Poker
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] There's no drug that can improve your performance well enough at the table to fade the longterm disadvantage of requiring a substance to play your best game of poker. [/ QUOTE ] I think it's funny that people think caffeine or a red bull actually helps their game. My experience is that getting wired makes you jumpy, and hurts your ability to focus. Maybe if you haven't slept in 24 hours, but otherwise I think some cardio exercise before your sessions is best at keeping you even keeled. [/ QUOTE ] Why do people think that Red Bull makes people wired and jumpy? It never has that effect on me, though it does work remarkably well to recover your focus and concentration when you're too exhausted to keep it up naturally (coffed is largely impotent, despite the hype). Maybe I'm just more immune to caffeine than others, being a lifetime heavy coffee drinker, and that's why I have different reaction that people typically describe. |

if poker was a sport, this thread might be relevant. But it's not. It's gambling, with cards, where we put up our own money and therefore can consume whatever [censored] substances we want. Oliver, what is your agenda here? [/ QUOTE ] One point could be that it would be very bad for poker's PR if people think that you need to be doped up on life-altering substances to be competitive in the game. |

Re: Doping (use of performance-enhancing drugs) in Poker
[ QUOTE ]
\Paul Phillips wrote in Slate.com that he was planning to take Modafinil for the 2005 WSOP. Modafinil is NOT used to treat ADHD. Modafinil is banned by WADA as a stimulant. Disgraced sprinter Kelli White was busted for taking Modafinil at the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris. She admitted to taking a 1000mg Modafinil tablet minutes before her final 100 metre race. [/ QUOTE ] -Modafinil is indeed used to treat ADD/ADHD, although it is not an on-label use yet, as stated here. There is actually a lot of evidence that it is useful. -Modafinil is NOT a 'stimulant' in the literal chemical sense. -I'm not sure why you keep bringing up WADA standards - it seems clear the gains in tournament poker are marginal at best compared to simple luck . . . maybe you should spend more time getting your client to stop making up stories about "4-table addiction" to online poker and stay out of chemistry discussions where you seem to have only a cursory understanding of the topic? |
