Hopefully an HR person will provide you the answer but I suspect the crappy funds are cheaper to the company. Talk to your HR, preferably at a happy hour over many drinks.

Brad,

The pre-tax nature of a 401k contribution cannot be ignored.

How big is your company? Sometimes it is a paperwork nightmare (and/or laziness) for you HR to switch. Smaller companies are generally limited into what funds they can get into due to cost restraints and low balances.

I do agree though that many offer one and two star funds, which suck.

Huh??

I never said that a 401k wasn't a good idea & should be ignored. I simply said that if someone feels they can make more money by investing part of their salary on their own because of bad investment choices offered by their employers, then by all means go for it. If I were in that situation, I would, at a minimum, put in enough money for the employer match. That's like giving up free money. 401k's are great for the average Joe Investor like me but certainly not the only game in town.
