Default Why do you think people want to mod?

This is really two distinct questions.

First, why do people actually want to mod, which presumably can only be answered by those who mod or honestly wish they could?

Second, for the rest of us, what do you suspect are the reasons people want to mod?

In other words, I'm interested in both the truth and the perception.

From my perspective, being a mod seems like an incredible hassle, so I can only speculate that those who mod are motivated by one or more of the following:

-an altruistic desire to help the 2+2 community
-a desire to feel important (i.e., ego)
-a need to fill their time

Is that about it?

I think your second one pretty much sums it up.

I've modded/administrated a forum before. My motivation was mostly because I wanted to see it done right and I had very strong feelings on what the right way was. Further, I just plain didn't trust very many other people to do it right. There was more at stake than a silly OT discussion forum, though (not to take anything away from the OT mods here - it's a pain in the ass job and they generally do a good job). Once things were running well and everything was well established with a solid group of other mods involved, I gave it up, as it was just too much of a drain on my time.

Given the choice of having mod powers or not having mod powers with no responsibilities attached, obviously everyone would choose to have the powers. Whether one thinks that the responsibilities are worth this power is personal preference. I don't think that's ego.

add "power trip" to the ego thing and i reckon you've got the bases summed up. But it ain't just modding here, it's a common human feature.

uggh, I only read poker forums and car forums, and my initial reaction was "to make it faster"

I used to moderate a fairly large tech forum, never again.
