Sidenote on a pet peeve of mine:

[ QUOTE ]

as an african-american who attended one of these schools i can assure you that this is true. i attended a private school where the student body was ~9% african-american,

[/ QUOTE ]

Why do you identify yourself as an African-American? Unless you were born in Africa(ignore if you were) then you're no more an African-American than I am an Irish-American.

The term is such politically correct BS that ignores that
A) Black people come from places other than Africa
B) That if you were born in America, you're an American, period.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow, just wow. What NT! said. This statement is ridiculously ignorant.

i reference it as such b/c that is how it is commonly referenced. also, the term black includes various caribbean nations which do not fit into the same ethnicity as me.

edit: agree w/jay and nt

edit2: feel the need to reference it b/c of the history of african americans in america. do i really need to explain any further?

except in this case instead of discussing some preening no-talent ass clown in ballhugging jeans we are talking about the social wellbeing of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people

but other than that yeah, pretty much exactly the same

Haha.

The point is that except for a few subsets of Asian Americans, they're all in the same boat as blacks, hispanics, AmerIndians, etc.

Blame ESPN.
Who's the better receiver, T.O. or Marvin Harrison?
Who gets more airtime?
ESPN rewards poor behavior.

NT,

that's all fine and good, but what follows your first paragraph has nothing to do with said paragraph. That second paragraph could be supportive of many things (racism, effects of economic disparity, etc etc), but I still don't see what it has to do with white society conformity.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, in terms of education, what is 'white society'? Going through school, there were but a few basic rules to follow as a student:

1. sit down
2. shut up
3. pay attention

The rest was just following instructions. What's inherently white about that?

Also, yes, I realize I'm being awfully simple here. I'm not trying to marginalize/distort anything, I truly just don't know and am curious to find out.

[/ QUOTE ]

I pretty much agree with this. I have read some of the same research as NT and what he said is true. I just can't see how that is trying to "whiten" African-Americans. If anything, it is trying to get them socially adapted to a work place. I would agree if you said there is a great emphasis to get students ready for corporate America i.e. show up, do you work, get rewarded. That is how society is and how I believe the vast majority of students should be educated.

NT ad JoA, without writing a 6,000 word post, how do you think inner-city youth should be educated or what changes would you make?

Marvin Harrison also hasn't ripped his QB, got traded, tried to kill himself etc.

Like it or not, Marvin's just not as newsworthy.

Dude, you can call yourself whatever you want as far as me and 100% of the reasonable posters here are concerned. You should not feel obligated to explain yourself.
