Yeah, I think cross posting in some other forums would be good.

Nice pics.

I swear, every time I feel like abandoning this thread, someone comes along and says something like that. Gives me fuel for another month.

Hey Loungers, the expectants are dwindling. Any suggestions on getting more names on this list?

Well, aside from the obvious.

Trip report (my first - be gentle!):

Background - we had a pseudo scary moment or two 5 weeks ago (6 weeks before due date) when ultrasound estimates put him at 8 lbs - projecting him at about 11 pounds at 40 weeks. Dr. ultimately felt he wasn't nearly that large, plus did multiple tests for gestational diabetes (big babies are often caused by this) that all came up negative. We were relieved and felt things were OK and that maybe the ultrasound was a fluke, and put it out of our minds...

Fast forward to last week - 1 week before he's due. We go to the OBGYN for the weekly visit - wife has been getting uncomfortably large - she's 5' 3". So they decided the week prior to do one more ultrasound just to check things out.

Ultrasound doctor expert starts her thing and is clearly immediately surprised at how large he is. His head and stomach literally max out the machine (error messages / red flashing - good times). Uh oh. They capture various measurements into the machine... and it spits out 11 lbs 9 oz as an estimate plus / minus 33 oz. I'm partially scared, and partially feel like I caught a prize winning fish.

Doctor calls someone else in to look at the measurements and confirm things are correct - this doctor is also shaking her head smiling and joking about our big boy. Both immediately ask about gestational diabetes, we confirm negative findings so far. Neither is our OBGYN - we have the appointment with her next - but the 2nd doctor mentions that a vaginal delivery might be difficult. No kidding...

I'm amused by the whole thing, but at the same time can tell my wife is quietly freaking out. So, thinking I'm being helpful, I ask something like "well, you do so many deliveries here (this is the major children's hospital in Houston BTW) - what are the largest babies you've seen doing this?" Both doctors say "yours is it". Nice move me.

So we're waiting what should be 10 minutes for the appt with the OBGYN. We end up waiting 90 minutes, which only rachets up the tension for my wife. She's freaking out because she does not relish the idea of pushing out a toddler. I'm reassuring her that there's no way they'd let her do this... and she's thinking that 11 lbs 9 oz could be the low end - the margin for error could put him at 14 pounds. And of course, we really don't want a freakishly large baby. We start imagining ourselves on the evening news (we don't want this). She's a worst case scenario type...

Doctor arrives, and after some dancing around - she must have thought we were sold on a vaginal delivery, so it took a while for everyone to get to the obvious conclusion - we scheduled a c-section for 5/21, 7:30 AM.

Weekend goes by, we imagine having a 14 pounder, try to stay relaxed, hoping all goes well...

So today we get up at 4:30 AM, get to the hospital at 6:00, surgery starts at 7:30. Everything works out absurdly well, and out comes our little boy, 10 lbs 9 oz, 21 1/2 ". His blood sugars are perfectly normal (eliminating doubt about the gestational diabetes). He's just a big, solid little thing - and he was awake and alert for much of the day! I've seen my baby pix (I was, ahem, not cute) - luckily he's a seriously cute looking little thing...

So today has been a whirlwind - and now I have a little boy. I'm still stunned by how normal yet extraordinary today has been - life is great!

Thanks to dcasper for pointing me to this thread...

EDIT: brag - I think I've won the heavyweight award, no?!
