I honestly don't care how this is decided, but I think the argument that "I didn't try as hard because of my competition" is 1) a bad excuse and 2) kind of disrespectful to your opponent. This isn't a physical event where you have to balance the amount of effort you put in now with the amount of energy you will have in later rounds. It's a silly MSPaint competition (for the moniez). I hardly even paid attention to my opponent because it really only matters what MY entry looks like and how I feel it will do.

btw, having the voting be anonymous is almost moot considering most people can easily deduce who is who when they only have 2 choices

i personally think the matchups shouldve remained publicly anonymous as well
