help people avoid bad movies (and watch good ones)
I tend to watch or record most new movies that come out on HBO/showtime/etc.
Here are the ones I currently have on my DVR. Most of these movies suck, because most of the good ones I watch in the theater or watch right when they come out on cable. So these are mainly ones that I thought about seeing when they came out, but got crappy reviews, or maybe they have one actor I like or something (or were a bit obscure or i just missed them and sounded good or i heard were good). Some don't even make it this far, like Step Up and John Tucker Must Die. But plenty of crappy ones do. Here's the list. Please share your opinions on how bad they really suck, and whether some are actually good. I'm sure some of you have similarly crappy movies on your DVRs (or have wasted hours watching horrible movies on cable). Post your opinions here on what to catch/avoid: invincible last holiday the da vinci code waiting lord of war four brothers the weather man bubba ho-tep the break-up the omen into the blue find me guilty capote be here to love me: a film about townes van zandt the assassination of richard nixon this film is not yet rated click ong-bak the thai warrior broken flowers intacto ghosts of abu ghirab an inconvenient truth y tu mama tambien bus 174 posiedon freedomland the squid and the whale constantine kiss kiss, bang bang the chronicles of narnia shopgirl the motorcyle diaries north country brokeback mountain |

Re: help people avoid bad movies (and watch good ones)
you can record movies that are on HBO/showtime on demand?
i dont think time warner DVR lets you do that. anyways, i have only seen da vinci code, lord of war, and break up, and I would say all are worth watching but not a shame if you miss them. lord of war is probably my favorite but only bc of how much cage just pwns ppl in it. |

Re: help people avoid bad movies (and watch good ones)
Bubba Ho-Tep is very, very good. By far the best on the list that I've seen.
Broken Flowers is OK, if you like Jarmusch or liked Murray in Lost in Translation. Kind of slow and rambling with a few very good scenes mixed in. Lord of War was fairly bad. The Chronicles of Narnia was horrible. Constantine was horrible - but you probably already strongly suspect this. Capote was extremely well-acted, though there are plenty of other movies I'd rather watch. |

Re: help people avoid bad movies (and watch good ones)
i've seen 10 or 11 of the movies on this list, i'm pretty much "meh" on all of them to varying degrees. the only one i'd recommend with enthusiasm is ong-bak. that [censored] was awesome. the others: invincible = meh da vinci code = i thought it'd suck but i actually kinda liked it. four brothers = meh omen = original was better click = not funny y tu mama tambien = it was ok constantine = another movie that got slammed but which i sorta enjoyed. kiss kiss bang bang = really, really, really, really, really bad. please don't watch. chronicles of narnia = sucked brokeback mountain = meh |

broken flowers [/ QUOTE ] What really pissed me off was how the Sopranos stole the ending from this crappy flick. Agree with your choices except Capote. |

Re: help people avoid bad movies (and watch good ones)
Catch:
y tu mama tambien Does a simply amazing job of showing the interconnectedness of city life using fascinating characters and a storyline that does not disappoint. Find me guilty Vin Diesel's character is a lot of fun in this movie, and it's interesting to see how the mafia operates inside a courtroom. It's not excellent, but it's a very pleasant surprise. If you're generally repulsed by mobster movies because you hate the characters, then you won't like this movie. Otherwise, it's worth a shot an inconvenient truth worthwhile and politically relevent. I disliked the biographical stuff, but it didn't get in the way of me enjoying the movie. lord of war Not as good as thank you for smoking, but it's excellent in the same vein. the omen very decent remake with good special effects and great casting. shopgirl good acting, nice well paced character driven plot) the assassination of richard nixon amazing acting by Sean Penn + interesting portrait of working class political outrage brokeback mountain phenomenal acting, beautiful scenery, unique and moving story, artfully avoids stereotypical characters and dialogue kiss kiss, bang bang all around hilarious and full of great action and you get to see Val Kilmer play a gay guy! ong-bak the thai warrior one of the best martial arts performances I have ever seen by anyone ever Avoid: freedomland worse than you can possibly imagine constantine this is pretty bad but if you are into occulty type stuff and just want a popcorn movie and are bored, etc. then it might be ok four brothers not terrible because some of the action scenes are ok. To be conservative, I say avoid it, but it's closer to the border than you might think the weather man A pseudo-meaningful movie about family drama that is slow-paced, overuses internal monologue, and features Nicolas Cage with his Botox acting abilities in full force. Not abominable, but not at all worthwhile or satisfying from any standpoint the break-up Vince Vaughan gets a good amount of awesome lines in this movie and John Favreau is a lot of fun too. However, Jennifer Aniston weighs this down immensely with an uninteresting character and a lackluster performance. Also, Vaughan and Aniston have zero screen chemistry |

Re: help people avoid bad movies (and watch good ones)
All,
There were a bunch on there that I've watched but hadn't deleted. My thoughts: invincible - watched a couple of nights ago, was pretty blah, i mean fine for an underdog sports movie, but yeah pretty blah last holiday - you know exactly what will happen, but i like queen latifah, just a basic feel good movie the da vinci code - i thought the book was dumb and this was just as dumb except with lots less detail and lots of elaboration for stupid people, hence it was even more dumb than the book waiting - saw this last night and was mildly entertaining, sorta like an office space/clerks hybrid, but not as funny as either. nothing great, decent popcorn movie. lord of war - this is basically the exact type of movie i love, except that it sucked four brothers - this is also basically the exact type of movie i love, except that it sucked the breakup - this just basically sucked bad into the blue - this sucked, except you get to see jessica alba and another hot chick in a bikini a lot, so that rules click - this was exactly as you would expect, is ok but not all that great. mildly entertaining popcorn movie y tu mama tambien - saw it in theater and liked it ok, wanted to watch it again since i figure i missed some stuff w/ the subtitles the motorcyle diaries - same thing constantine - I've seen this and thought it sucked, but bad beetz insists it is a great movie, so I'm gonna give it another chance The following are the ones I haven't seen. These are ones I expect to suck: the weather man find me guilty the omen posiedon These are ones I expect to enjoy: bubba ho-tep capote be here to love me: a film about townes van zandt this film is not yet rated broken flowers the squid and the whale kiss kiss, bang bang shopgirl These are ones I'm not sure about: the assassination of richard nixon ong-bak the thai warrior intacto ghosts of abu ghirab an inconvenient truth bus 174 freedomland the chronicles of narnia north country brokeback mountain |

Re: help people avoid bad movies (and watch good ones)
All,
Please add more movies in the "didn't bother to see in a theater, but figured WTF, it's on HBO why not" category and your thoughts. |
