Hey, if Kobe's paid to win championships, and fails to do so, it stands to reason he should be taking a 1/3 pay cut with performance incentives added, no?

[/ QUOTE ]

There is absolutely no way that Kobe is paid to win championships. Kobe is paid to play basketball, to make jumpers, to play defense. Players do not win championships.

This sounds like really weird reasoning to me. If players do not win championships, and people in this thread are arguing that the Yankees won all those World Series in spite of Torre, then who exactly did win those championships? Either Torre did, or the Yankees players did.

So, who wins championships?

Right. The team. Of players. So, players win championships.

I'm not arguing anything about the merits of Kobe. I could care less about Kobe. I just find it funny that people are, on the one hand, saying Torre was due for a pay cut for not winning a World Series the last several years, and on the other hand, arguing that Kobe must be somehow worth 10x more than Torre, and on the 3rd hand, arguing that players don't even win championships in the first place, while Kobe's team hasn't won a championship in years. Besides, isn't Phil Jackson higher paid than Joe Torre was?

The truth is, in any sport, the manager's overall impact on wins and losses is fairly minimal, and I'm not arguing otherwise.

It is asinine to say that Kobe is paid to win championships. It is asinine to say that Kobe won the Lakers three championships. Kobe is a playeR. PlayerS win championships. Collections of them. TEAMS of them. I've capitalized the salient letters.
