I fold but only because he capped it preflop. Even otherwise solid players just can't resist 3 barreling out of position when they 3-bet from the small blind for instance vs an open raise--almost no matter what they have it seems.

First off, I think folding the flop is bad b/c we have a gutshot and a backdoor flush, and set outs which are, while tainted, going to be good some non-zero amount of the time HU.

That said I think there are plenty of players like villain who will cap nearly any PP preflop, hands like A9+, KT+, and SC-type stuff. Add in rogue "regain-the-initiative-bluffs" and I think the flop (and turn) calls are fine.

What to do on the river requires more detailed knowledge of your opponent... some will just keep firing with something like 88 because they have the initiative and don't know what to do with it, many will fire the flop and turn knowing that you'll fold gutters on the turn but will give up on the river with most worse hands.
