Re: Iron Chef OOT 12/13-12/24
None of the produce is in season. Parm is clearly the best choice. CSC, exercise some editorial control here and do the right thing!

Re: Iron Chef OOT 12/13-12/24
While that is true (and maybe a fun challenge down the road) the idea is that the participants will think creatively with the secret ingredient at the front of their mind. Past dishes have been chastised by the voters for not featuring the secret ingredient. Personally, I wish the voters were a little more lax in their demands to see the secret ingredient being the star of the dish. For instance, my chicken-bacon meatball pasta dish was said to have not enough bacon in it. If the current vote leader, onion, is selected, a vegetible soup merely including onion as an ingredient probably won't be received well. It will be a tough challenge to make onion more of the star instead of having it relegated to the role of tying other flavors together. That's part of what makes Iron Chef OOT tough for the participants.

I just voted for mushrooms. I'd love to see more mushroom ideas. EDIT: Avocado or Parmesan would be nice choices as well.

Well on the TV show, I believe one of the point sections is based on originality, or how well the secret ingredient is used. So yeah, you could make any dish and throw the secret ingredient on top of it, but you won't get points for it and you'd lose. I'm not sure how the judging works in OOT.
I'm really hoping mushroom wins this week or soon. |

[/ QUOTE ] avacados and pineapple can be had fresh and ripe all year long. Tomato is just falling out of season (just picked up some delicous tomatoes from Whole Foods), it is a great time for winter squash. I can agree with you on pears. Beets, onions.... not really sure. Regardless, transporation and shipping methods have improved drastically over the past 20 years. We can get good produce from South America during their summer. |

Re: Iron Chef OOT 12/13-12/24
The tomatoes you had were either in cold storage or from South America. Peak tomatoes are in September, and are definitely no longer picked by November in North America. Squash, onions and pears are most recently in season, and all store well, so if we have to do produce, these would get my vote. But it's your show, so I'll stop preaching....Sorry, it's just my pet issue!

Re: Iron Chef OOT 12/13-12/24
csc,
I've never watched the iron chef on tv so I don't know how it works. I didn't know that the idea was to have a random ingredient that can be used in many dishes. I kinda like the idea though. |

[/ QUOTE ] My local grocery stores are packed with pears, a great fall/early winter fruit. That's why I suggested it to Mrs. Utah - I figured everyone could get them. Insert subliminal message here: VOTE PEARS! |
