Family Crisis
MTTc,
Many of you know me from the MTTc from my small stakes play. Usually the 4/180's. As some of you know my father was diagnosed w/ cancer roughly 4 years ago. Last Saturday I came over to visit him, as I do many weekend days, only to find him passed away. My father's name is Tim Luby. My dad has been the most supportive person in my poker carreer. He was the only one that knew I could beat the game and that I wouldn't let it ruin my life, as others in my family were worried about. He was a man among men. A few years ago he informed me of a life insurance policy in case something like this were to happen. As of now we the family cannot find any documentation regarding this. Although we have contacted his employer and the insurance company it is not outside the realm of possibility that they deny either the claim or the fact that he even had the policy. As we the family strive to come up with the funds for the funeral, his IRS debt, and his withstanding credit debt I ask the MTTc to keep our family in their thoughts and prayers. Here is the link to his obituary. I am his youngest son Jake and he was not only my father, but he was one of my best friends. I appreciate your guys' time reading this and hope none of you go through what I have gone through. |

Re: Family Crisis
I am sorry to hear about your loss.
Please speak to a lawyer about the IRS and outstanding debt. His estate may be liable for those debts, but his relatives are personally not liable, i.e., if he owes $7k on a VISA card that is only under his name, those debts may not become someone else's debts. They can't come to you to collect the money. Same goes for the IRS in regards to back taxes. However, his estate may include things such as a home, etc., and businesses can make claims against the estate which could ultimately require assets in his name be sold. Don't read that post as being the answer, but I urge you to go see a lawyer in your area on this matter, because those folks are known to strongarm relatives into accepting liability for someone's debts when they are not entitled to do so. Good luck. |
