Default 6max.: betting those pocketpairs... a tightrope walk

Hello,

heres a recent one.

Poker Room skin
Limit Holdem Ring game
Limit: $0.25/$0.5
5 players
Converter

Pre-flop: (5 players) hero is UTG with 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 7[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]
hero raises, 2 folds, SB calls, BB folds.

Flop: 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (5SB, 2 players)
SB checks, hero bets, SB calls.

Turn: 4[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (3.5BB, 2 players)
SB checks, hero checks.

River: 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3.5BB, 2 players)
SB bets, hero calls.

Results:
Final pot: 5.5BB

Should I have stayed aggressive on the turn? I couldnt imagine a hand that calls and doesnt beat me (except the flushdraw, I would be ahead there)

Although most players (including me) are inexperienced in SH HE I cant imagine anyone calling down a PF raiser with a pair a 5s or deuces.

I suspected

25% a higher pocketpair
60% overcards
15% flushdraw

adding it up I wasnt ahead, so I decided to check the turn behind and see what the river brings. Since it was "only" the flushdraw, that I thought to be least possible, I tried to induce a bluff.
I was prepared to take this hand to the showdown anyway. I didnt donk the river because I didnt see any worse hands that call me, only better ones possibly raising. Checking, as I said, may induce a bluff (from overcards) and give me an extra big bet.

Not a true masterplan, but the pot was too big on the turn + river to give it up with middlepair.

Whaddayasay?

greets

This should be posted in microlimits.

In general you should bet the turn instead of checking behind. If you are raised on the turn, fold your hand confidently knowing that you are beat and have only 2 outs to a winning hand.

Lots of hands could have peeled the flop, such as KT or A5. You would like these hands to fold or to at least put in another bet with the worst hand if they choose not to fold. You will see lots of loose calldowns in LHE, especially shorthanded.

Bet the turn for value; don't give weak hands free cards to beat you. If you are called on the turn, your hand may or may not have enough value to bet again on the river. That depends on your read. Many players with a jack would have check raised on an earlier street. Thus you may get a call from A5 or AK or who knows what.

You would fold to a turn raise here? I like a 3-bet as the last bet going in.

not betting the turn is insane

for lots of reasons, these guys are calling with tons of hands, only a few of which beat you. also you need to get value out of gutshots, fd's, overcards

usually at these stakes you can toss if you get raised quite easily too. there may be like 1 other player at the table where it'd be correct to call the turn raise but that's it.
