Fold seems fine, there aren't enough cards dead to let you chase. If your opponent has a made low with an open end straight draw or a made straight, you're wrong to call.

I wouldn't bet fourth, you're screaming at him that you have aces and you'll make him play correctly. If you get raised, you may get stuck calling to the end even when you want to fold. (5th is a nice example)

I wouldn't create nightmare visions of his hand on third, raising with an ace from third to last position may not scare people as much.

Incidentally, I don't think the magazine article used good examples for the issue; the entire article was based on twodimes simulations with 853, which is the textbook case of a low hand not to play. Give your opponent credit for at least a gutshot straight draw, and then look at your chances.
