I really think there should be a very basic, general knowledge test that people have to take in order to vote.

First question:

Is the Earth round or flat?

Here's the clip on Youtube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=9ACobXN7_p8

It's pretty nuts that she doesn't know, but she brings up a good point. Knowing whether the world is flat or round is a useless fact and unnecessary in everyday life.

There are lots of facts that are not needed in everyday life that are still widely known. The lack of practical use isn't an excuse for not knowing something any idiot would know.

Why not? Seems reasonable to me. Even though it's unusual not to know this, it really isn't useful except for impressing people like like you.

When it comes to people telling me that they believe the Earth is not flat, I'm wholly unimpressed.

Little known fact, but since ancient times men of learning knew the earth was a sphere (or at least not flat) - in fact the ancient greeks not only knew it, they actually measured the earth pretty accurately using mathematical extrapolation.

also, i'm fairly certain that columbus and his peers didn't believe the world was flat either. and in fact, columbus was arguing that the earth was smaller than previously estimated and for this reason he could sail to india by going west. he was wrong and only survived because america was there for him to stop on.
