Default (NLTRN) First hand, KQ on a JTx flop

First hand in a 22 turbo, unknown villain. I'm BB with KQ.

Villain minraises to 40, I raise to 100, villain calls.

Flop comes J T 4 rainbow.

With 200 in the pot, I lead for 120. Villain raises to 400. I shove.

This was an uncharacteristically agressive move on my part, and I'm not sure if I like it, perhaps largely because this is the first hand. I know if i were in villain's place and had a jack with any kicker, I'd call here every time, because a guy betting big on the first hand is frequently a maniac.

If this were further into the match, I'd feel confident that my play was correct, since then, I think we'd have more fold equity. But given it's the first hand, what do you think of this move?

You're getting 2.5:1 to see a turn card . We know for certain that after this opponent raises you are no better than 50 % to win . If he has something like aj , then you are pushing as an underdog . I may have just called here hoping to hit my straight but pushing all in gives you fold equity . It isn't an easy decision on your first hand but I may lean towards calling .

I don't mind the push, seeing you are out of position if you call the bet and don't improve. What happens if the turn doesn't improve your hand; what is your plan of action then? If I was in position, I would call trying to get a free card if I brick the turn.

Good point Mr.

Here are some good reasons to call :

You're getting 2.5:1 and there are about 14 good cards and 33 bad cards which is about 2.35:1 . On average you have a bit less than 14 outs but it's more or less consistent with the pot odds you're getting .

Good reasons to push :

You have some fold equity and since it's the first hand , your opponent may think he can outplay you later and fold something like middle pair . I can't blame you for either decision as I think it's pennies either way .

Come to think of it , since you are out of position for the hand it is probably slightly better to push all in .
