Default Had him right where I wanted him......I thought.

CAZ 20/40
Tight passive game compared to the norm.

Villan plays most all of his hands and raises about half of them. He is terrible but at the moment is running over the table. I attemt to change this.

Folds to Hero OTB. Hero raises A8, SB (Villan) calls, BB calls.

Flop: 2 4 5 rainbow.

check, check, Hero bets, Villan calls, BB folds.

Turn A, completing the rainbow.

check, check.

River J: Villan bets, hero raises?

No? Yes? Maybe? All streets please.

Ummmm, I hate the river raise. You have a hand that you can take to showdown, and your opponent is never folding a better hand, or even a better ace, just call the river...

What are you trying to get out of your river raise, answer that before you decide to raise.

Are you getting a better hand to fold? No

Are you raising for value for a worse hand to call....outside of some random worse A, don't see him calling with those either.

Are you raising as a bluff? Your hand has showdown value...

I just don't understand the point of the river, sorry.

Pope, I changed the river, it was a J not a 5.

And honestly at the time I thought he would bet-call with any pair.

Bah, all my response was based on it pairing the 5, although I don't know how much difference a J makes. But I need to get to bed for stupid work in the morning, so my analysis stands until the morning.

I think it makes a big difference because now I can beat a 5 and a J. Sorry I screwed that up.

I think betting the turn is far superior to checking. I'm much happier calling down a turn c/r than wondering if I should call down a river 3-bet. You don't mention how bad villain is postflop, but it takes a very specific type to make check turn/raise river better than bet/bet/call down if raised. Preflop and flop look automatic, although I'd consider limp-reraise preflop if he really is 90/45 and dumb like you claim.

If he's calling with any pair, I think I'd rather just bet the turn and river. You said he's terrible, so why get fancy?

I might check the turn sometimes, but it would only be to induce a bluff from an aggressive opponent. In which case I'm just calling.

So, no, I don't like it.

if he's going to bet-call any pair, you're better off just betting the turn. this is a pretty scary board for you to suddenly decide to try this btw.

don't raise river plz. If he has a worse ace, it's often made a straight or 2 pair. If you think he's dumb enough to call river with a hand you beat, then why not just bet the turn?

In short: preflop is good
Flop is good
Turn is either a check with intention of calling river, or a bet, with intention of betting turn also.
