Learning Spanish

I'm trying to better myself. I wish to learn a foreign language, namely Spanish. Can anyone give any tips on the best way to go about this from home?

I realize the best way to learn a language is to speak it, preferrably in a foreign country. But unfortunately, due to my work schedule, I cannot travel to a foreign country, nor can I take evening classes at a local university.

I know to eventually get better, eventually I will have to be instructed by a fluent Spanish speaker. However, any recommendations to start off, to get the basics down?

I personally learned Spanish by watching lots of Spanish language TV programming, getting a dictionary and following along the best I could.

Start watching DVDs in Spanish with English subtitles. Also, start going to your local Mexican restaurant a couple of times a week and speaking to the staff only in Spanish.

Go to your local library. They likely have language CDs. These are extremely helpful. If you are sitting at home or something listen to them for an hour or so while you are reading leisurely or practice instead of watching TV. They are quite helpful.

Watching movies in Spanish with English subtitles is also a good idea as was mentioned. For extra practice watch the movie like this once and then remove the subtitles the second and subsequent times you watch it.

Another thing you could do is get comics in Spanish. After you have learn some of the words and stuff, you could start reading comics, the graphics should help you understand.

I guess even a better idea than comics are children's books in Spanish. You might be able to find this in a library or by buying them from people you know speak Spanish.

I was in italy last month and tried not speaking english; I learnt pretty much everything out of a phrasebook and it worked fine, but it was frustrating talking in fractured phrases and poor grammar. I really think the DIY kits, followed by evening classes, followed by immersion are best.

Mum wants to learn Latin American Spanish, so I'll bump this when she gets started. I offered to "language spar" with her on the phone to get her talking it.
