Default Best backup programs?

I'd like to start backing up my entire system on an external HD. I'd like to be able to boot off of the external HD or restore my internal HD to the backed up state easily. What's the best program (with no consideration for price) out there for what I'm trying to do? Are there any free software programs that would allow me to do this? Thanks a lot for any help.

Edit: I also have two separate partitions and need it to back up both. I'd like for it to not take too much time (computer time is fine, just not looking for it to take a lot of work as I'd like to backup often).

That may be what you are looking for. I have not tried it, but am thinking about it. It makes a bootable copy of your HD.
