How should a society deal with drugs?
Having read some opinions from people who are Acist i am curious to find out why they are against the current system with tough drug laws.
If i have understood things correctly you want drugs to be legal and available to everyone? Drugs are dangerous to humans and that's why they are illegal. You believe in the persons free will to decide whether he wants to take them or not? |

Re: How should a sociaty deal with drugs?
Societies don't act. Once you accept that, the answer should be fairly intuitive.

[/ QUOTE ] I have no idea how to "deal with drugs in the current society". I don't interact with "society" I interact with people. This question makes no more sense to me then asking me how I would deal with golf equipment in the current society. |

[/ QUOTE ] We've been over this, when a group of people act with a common goal, it's a semantic argument to say either "a bunch of individuals acted" or "A group acted". That said, drugs are only an issue as long as there's a welfare state. If I have to pay for your healthcare then I have a right to tell you what you put in your body. Of course, I'm not for a welfare state, so it's not an issue for me. Also, I'm a big fan of letting people do almost anything on their own property, so someone mainlining Heroin in their living room is super neato cool to me. Cody |

[/ QUOTE ] We've been over this, when a group of people act with a common goal, it's a semantic argument to say either "a bunch of individuals acted" or "A group acted". [/ QUOTE ] No, it's more than that. It's a sloppy shortcut that masks *important* details. It hides the fact that there is coercive interaction going on. Saying something like "Bob doesn't like drugs" is one thing - bob has his own opinion. Saying "society doesn't like drugs" is another - some people in that society may LIKE drugs, even if they are a minority. The serious problem comes in when "society" then DOES THINGS using "society's opinion" as a motivation, or worse, as a justification. The fact that "society likes blue and hates red" doesn't mean people who happen to disagree with the hivemind lose their right to enjoy red. [ QUOTE ] That said, drugs are only an issue as long as there's a welfare state. If I have to pay for your healthcare then I have a right to tell you what you put in your body. [/ QUOTE ] False. Two wrongs don't make a right. If I force you to accept a Picasso, do I suddenly have a right to dictate to you how you display it, what security arrangements you must make, etc? It's costing me a lot of money to do this for you!!! |

Re: How should a sociaty deal with drugs?
Why are they dangerous?
If you use them irresponsibly and cause harm, you are liable for the damage you cause. If you cause harm to yourself, you can and probably will do harm to yourself anyway. If they are decriminalized, do you think there'll be a mad dash for people to start using hard core drugs? Why? Just because they aren't criminal, all of a sudden most people don't care about their kids, their jobs, their bodies, their lives? That's absurd. Some will use them, and if they abuse them, they'll have a heavy price to pay. Almost everything is dangerous to humans -- driving, eating red meat, drinking hard liquor, working all week, playing sports, using gas grills, having sex, climbing ladders ... let's ban it all. |

Re: How should a sociaty deal with drugs?
I think whether you abuse drugs or not you may easily find yourself addicted to them and that's when your problems start.
Of course some may harm or kill you right away. |

[/ QUOTE ] Junk food, promiscuous sex, liquor, internet poker, adrenaline sports, internet politics forums are addictive as well. If people KNOW something has a high risk of addiction and CHOOSE to partake in it anyway, why do you think it's your job to use violence to stop them? |

[/ QUOTE ] You can't compare sport nor internet politics to drugs. So you would rather live in a society where drugs existed and where legal and easy to come by? Does anyone benefit from drugs in any way? Why have it around when it only spreads decadency and in worst case death? What are the positive effects of it? are there any? |
