Tomorrow evening I'm auditioning with Kaplan to tutor GMAT. I have to do a 5 minute presentation on something interesting and non-academic. Some examples they gave: "How to Interpret the Label on a Bottle of Red Wine," "How to Find an Apartment," and "How to Parachute safely from a plane."

Use of whiteboard is key, as is engaging the audience to get them to participate.

I'm drawing a complete blank on topic...need a fun and interesting one that lends itself well to whiteboard usage and audience participation

the kaplan auditions are the easiest thing ever

two of the best auditions i saw (i've done it twice because my eligibility expired the first time) were:

1) how to make a really good peanut butter sandwich; discussed brands of both peanut butter (and chunky vs. smooth) and jelly, types of bread, other things to make the sandwich more interesting
2) how to make a really good pot of coffee (how to store the coffee, pre-ground vs. whole bean, don't burn the coffee) etc.

they are looking to see if you can teach / explain a concept. they are NOT looking to learn something new and interesting. remember, they have ALL THE MATERIALS FOR YOU, you are not going to get students and teach the GMAT your way; you are going to teach it THEIR WAY. so they don't care about originality, they care about:

do you speak clearly
are you nervous
can you convey your ideas in an understandable fashion

that type of thing. so the best route is a very simple subject that you know very well.

these are both important. (in the peanut butter example you can do things like pulling different brands from the other auditioners and then write them on the board etc.)

also, make sure you face the other people when speaking instead of speaking into the whiteboard
