I have been discussing this by e-mail with a British University Professor and published author.
You may be interested in reading his latest e-mail: "'Their' is often used in practice, (because it is shorter than 'his or her', and 'his' alone is sexist), which they are saying makes it acceptable. Maybe, but common usage doesn't make it grammatically correct. Another example is everyone now seems to say 'I'm bored of x' when it should be 'I'm bored with x' - I find it very annoying, but maybe we pedants can't hold up change. (Not 'us pedants', by the way, as many non-pedants would say!)" Toffee-nosed git, I thought. |

I remember something from way back in freshman English. The prof was not happy with the text because in the most current (at that time) edition of the text it introduced using their in this manner.
