Lost is for women, but Battlestar Galactica is for nerds. And there are better options for women(Firefly) and nerds(Firefly).
Have you seen The Wire or The Shield?

BG>>Lost. BG won Time's best TV show of 2005, though I believe it's second best after The Wire.
Watch the mini-series first. Firefly is an even better show that you may not have seen and it's only one season long.

It IS close, but I'd go with BSG.
By the way, the miniseries comes with the season 1 dvd set, so seeing it doesn't require any extra effort or cost (except a coupla hours, and it's definitely worth that).
