Free antivirus

Is free antivirus really as reliable/safe as antivirus that you actually pay for? I currently use Norton Systemworks 2007 and it is slowing my computer down too much so I want to switch to something else. McAfee? Any suggestions?

The free AVG is supposed to be very good.

AVG is probably better than both the popular pay antivirus software. A good for-pay, low-resource option is NOD32. Kaspersky is probably the best.

I've used free AVG on all of my computers for years, and it works great.

Use AVG or Antivir...they both use less resources than the consumer version of the "popular" Norton/Symantec products.

I have read a few independent reviews stating otherwise.
