Default Extensions on Papers

I had a pretty long paper due this afternoon that I was going to stay up to write but then I ended up falling asleep and getting zero of it done. I am now going to email my TA and ask for an extension. Should I just be honest and tell him that it will be a lot better if I could have a few extra days or what should I say? This is the first time I have asked for an extension and I have been a good student so far (in my opinion).

yeah, I guess be honest. Cite the reasons you think you "have been a good student so far", write intelligently

The course syllabus should have a late paper policy. Being a good student so far (in your opinion) is not a solid reason to give an extension. Think of something better. Also good students don't need extensions.

If you need an extension, go to the TA and talk to him/her personally. From experience, telling a student NO is much, much, easier through email than if they show up at my office.

i guess i either asked too late or there was just no way he was giving out extensions because I asked nicely and came up with a good excuse and he just said he couldn't do it because it would be unfair to the other students. Oh well. A late paper is only marked 1/3 of a grade down (A -> A-, B+ -> B) so it really isn't too bad.

Should I ask the prof. next time instead of the TA or come up with a better excuse or what? because I hear my friends getting extensions all the time.

really depends on the class. read the syllabus/rules, its probably a class rule. also, asking the day the paper is due rarely helps your case

Typically, it's wiser to ask the Prof directly instead of the TA. The TA may not have the authority to make that decision.
