If you're visting just one place in the former USSR, is Moscow the best place or are you better to go to St Petersburg (or somewhere else?)?

DON'T DRINK KVAS.

Oh god, I had some at Passover last year with the Russian side of my family... it was horrible.

BOOOOOOOO Good kvas (which is low-alcohol bread beer, you can find more info on beeradvocate.com) is a tremendous thing to drink during summer.

Aim for Armenian/ Georgian/ Ukrainian.

Seconded. One of the better meals I had here was at a Georgian restaurant, complete with VIP-places in a traditionally decorated cellar, and live music (don't plan on having important conversations though). I can't remember the exact name, I'm thinking Genatsvale (vali? vili? don't pin me on this, my Georgian is a bit rusty ) and near Kropotkinskaya station, on the red metro line.

EDIT: Same for the kvas obv. Unless it gives you food poisoning or sth. I don't see how anyone could hate it.

I hear you can get a great deal on polonium-210, but you have to know the right people.

Laugh at this all you want, but actually radioactive berries etc. from the Chernobyl have been intercepted during random street market checkups. Something like 200 kilos in 2005. This probably pales in comparison to the overall quantity sold, but it's food for thought nonetheless. (ahahah I'm the pun master..). Don't have a reference, I believe I read it in the Moscow Times back then.

What baffles me is not so much the scumbags that would sell that stuff. Either they don't know, or they just don't care about other people. It's probably not *THAT* dangerous for them to be around it, as long as they don't eat it.

But who the F harvests those things? If it's people that (still) live there, WTF are they gonna do with the money?

I lived in Russia the first 13 years of my life and go back regularly

Moscow is great, but you should really spend some time in St Petersburg, especially if you have appreciation for art, architecture and stuff like that. Hermitage is a must, Petergoff, white palace, very awesome stuff.

Nightlife is great and the girls put out. The love americans and they love speaking english.

don't flash money and don't talk [censored] to russians, they're all drunk degenerate low lifes (not really, but they're always looking for a fight)

go to a soccer game, it is mayhem and lots of fun imo. Also, hockey is a big thing, but obviously not during the summer

Id really recommend checking out the countryside. Its nice and quiet, if i were you i'd meet a nice girl at the club and ask her to take me to a nice place outside of moscow to a a lake or something and barbecue/have sex. trains are very good and cheap.

don't get taxis, waste of money. hitchhiking for the mf win.

ask me anything, i could go on forever.....

Don't say anything when the pussy is hairy; if internet porn has taught me anything (and then been corroborated by my russian friend) its a Schwarzwald down there.

[/ QUOTE ]

The only Russian pussy your friend had was somebody's grandmother, if that.

Beware of the taxi drivers at the airport as they will swarm foreigners. Also beware of gypsies. Enjoy the beautiful girls and clubs.

What kind of clubs do you hit up, and where.

How do they compare to U.S clubs?

Do you eventually speak Russian to the ladies? Or do you pretty much pretend your an American.

Do dudes hate on you? Or are they nice?

DO tell more about the nightlife.
