Another alternative, if you can't get a casino hotel room, or a nearby Tunica room is to stay at one of the Extended Stay Hotels in Memphis. The rates weren't raised for the tournament last year, and it can be a nice break from the constant casino atmosphere. But again you WILL have to make the drive from Memphis to Tunica everyday but it isn't all that bad, especially if you can't get a room in T-town.

I was planning on going.

Real basic questions already addressed but need some infos.

What would be the best time to go for smaller tournies?
What are the best casinos to stay at and what are the room rates going for?

for the Smaller events ($300 and $500) events you might want to register early (night before or early morning) because the lines for the early event registration at the Circuit in September was really long (about 2/3 hours of standing in line to get in.) and about 100 + alternates for the first event or 2.

The Summer event at the Gold Strike the lines were shorter and didn't take as long to get into the event.

My advice is if you really want to play it never hurts to register the night before.

The Harrahs events took both Tournament chips or Cash, the Gold Strike makes you buy tournament chips to pay for your entry so at the very least make sure you get your chips for the GS events before standing in the registration line.

Not sure when the registration desks open, I'll find out and post next time I get back from Tunica.

I'm not much of a tournament player but do the obvious...check their websites. Better yet go to this website:

http://www.tunicamiss.org/

it has links to every casino in town.

I'm staying at the Fairfield Inn in Southhaven, MS. Closest Marriott property to Tunica. How far of a drive will this be for me?

20-30 minutes each way, depending on time of day.

youtalkfunny - closer to 20 now that you can just take I-69?

Thinking that has to be a better option than trying to trudge through crappy Goodman Road traffic.

In other exciting news, that's where I stayed the very first day I came to this area in Sept, 2002. The company I was interviewing with put me up there.

Brad (or anyone else knowledgeable about Tunica poker scene)-

What are my chances of finding some decent 7-stud cash games to play during the two weeks of the tourneys? (I assume that neither of the tourneys has any stud events.)

I'm seriously considering making the drive over from ATL if I can find somewhere to stay...not having any luck so far, as even the Southhaven hotels seem full.

I don't follow stud.

But there is so much action going on and so many tables that IF there is going to be a time of year when bigger cash 7-stud is going then this would be it.

YTF might be able to answer your Q better if you gave an idea of the stakes you are hoping for.

Have you tried the Grand Casino for rooms? Guess it's possible for them to be sold-out already for 'outsiders' (lack of a better term) but they just sent me a coupon for 2 free nights between Sun-Thur in Jan.

Also try various hotels on Goodman Road in Southaven, MS which should be only about 20 minutes away.

Also -

Mon, Jan 10, 12p - Event 5, Limit 7-card stud, $500+50
Wed, Jan 12, 12p - Event 7, Limit 7-card stud Hi/Lo, $500+50

Sorry. I have no idea what to expect come January. January is a time where I stay away from the poker rooms as much as possible (I get antsy and claustrophobic in crowds).

My only experience with January poker in Tunica is from when I used to work at the Grand. I never went to the other card rooms--and what happened in past January's at the Grand have no bearing on what might happen there this year. Anything goes.

Two things I can help with:

--Yes, if you're staying in Southaven or Horn Lake, you do not want to take Goodman Rd (Rt 302). Instead, you want to take I-55 south to to I-69, which will take you right to the north entrance of the Grand.

--It's been 20 degrees above normal all winter so far. Forecast calls for a high of 71 today, and 73 tomorrow. My point: don't give up on golf just yet.
