Google the name "Andres Escobar".

In the 1994 World Cup, held in the United States, Colombia was not playing well. They were unfocussed and edgy, and there were rumours that the coach had received death threats from gangsters at home who were betting on the outcome of the matches. Not the best circumstances under which to play, obviously. But the tragedy came when, during their match against the U.S., Colombian defender Andres Escobar deflected an American cross into his own net, helping the Americans to a 2-1 victory and assuring the Colombians an early trip home.

Ten days later, outside a nightclub in Medellin, Escobar was gunned down, the assassin allegedly shouting “Goal!” with each shot. Escobar was only 27 years old.

Good endings: Ray Bourque (retired after winning Stanley Cup), Jerome Bettis (retired after winning the Super Bowl)

You got there before me. Other sporting ends seem trivial in comparison to death.

You can also add in Aryton Senna to the mix.

Alex Zanucci is another one you can add. One of the greatest drivers never to get to perform in F1 and who crashed and lost both of his legs. Given a year or two would have been a even more major star than he was.

There are a few pitchers with an infinite ERA in the Majors. They made the bigs, gave up at least one run without getting an out, and got sent back down.

Jim Carey won the Vezina trophy in his rookie season in the NHL and then basically disappeared after that.
